This kind of interface is the one that we are most familiar with since smartphones and touch screen devices have established their role in our daily routine. Touch interfaces: don’t lean on… my interface! A less uncomfortable from a user perspective solution is to take advantage of dwell-time based input and focal fixation: the command is activated if the user has been gazing a well-defined element of the interface a little bit longer than a causal fixation lasts.Ī few studies about this domain have been conducted by University researchers in Human-Computer Interaction and this is saying something about how this kind of thing, in real life, is not as straightforward as in science fiction movies and tv-series. The solution to avoid the Midas Touch effect, here, is to use the gaze as a pointing device to select an interface element and trigger the command by an explicit movement of the eye or maybe a few blinks. Jacob in Advanced interface design and virtual environments raise the problem in the development of eye-gazed based interfaces, when it comes to telling an intentional fixation of the interface element for activating a function from an accidental one that should produce no effect. It’s a few years since eye movement-based user interfaces have found their application in healthcare, science, and other kinds of industry. Eye-gaze interfaces: intentional fixation or casual gaze? I hope my reflections will inspire other UX designers to think over this topic and, maybe, go deeper into this topic. I made a quick list of the main contexts where all UX designers must be aware of the Midas Touch problem while designing their systems and interactions. The more we try to imagine (and design) fancy gestural interactions, maybe inspired by Tom Cruise in Minority Report, or try to find new ways to increase the naturalness of interaction with digital systems the more we are prone to run into the Midas Touch problem. This may sound like the most common expression of the Midas Touch phenomenon in interface design and so it is, actually, but the more we push our design beyond the borders of the physical interface the more the Midas Touch effect implications become fascinating. Lockscreen shortcut for flashlight activation on my iPhone XR But you know… a distracted user is not as sensitive as the main character in The Princess and the Pea fairy tale. It happens to me all the time and I hang around with the Flashlight on for an indefinite time, despite the set up of the Haptic Touch that should make me realize by a small vibration when the light turns on. I always long-press on the Flashlight icon on the iPhone lock screen accidentally. The most direct example that makes me think of Midas is about all the times that, unintentionally, I switch on the flashlight of my iPhone by just holding it in my hand (yes, I keep it in my hand all along while I’m out and walk… unless I need to keep my hands free for some reason). It’s a problem related to UI when we interact with a physical device and some commands are accidentally activated, but it can also be related to a system when the way it detects user’s voluntary commands and intentions to activate an interaction or pursue a goal is not accurate and reliable. The Midas Touch effect in UX design is something to make sure to avoid when designing an input interface, especially when they are based on gestures that can be easily performed with no intention. What’s the connection between Midas golden touch power and UX design, then? His wish was fulfilled, but, soon, he realized that he couldn’t touch food or drink and even his daughter without turning them into gold. Midas asked that everything he touched would turn into gold. King Midas is popular because Dionysus granted him whatever he would ask for as a reward for his hospitality. I’ve always been fascinated by Latin and Greek myths, so when I came across the reference to King Midas, this name chimed quite heavy with me. Years ago, I was studying interaction techniques for my Specialization in Interaction Design and I came across a piece of advice: while designing my prototype of a gestural interaction I had to make sure to avoid The Midas Touch problem. Every building should be connected to a road by one of the shorter sides of the building. If gaps are inevitable, they should be measured appropriately to fit in more road-required buildings. Every road should be either touching a road or a building that requires a road with no gaps.If any of these rules are broken, it is an inaccuracy. Rules - These are rules which evaluate your accuracy in laying out your road structure. In essence, what you should achieve are neat straight paths, connecting the buildings by their shorter side and, as rule 3 explains, a spider diagram. The first 3 take into account the accuracy of the road connections, whilst the second 3 are rules which are dependent on the buildings you have selected in your city and may vary from player to player. What we are trying to achieve here is by connecting the most buildings with the least number of roads possible.Īs it stands, I have 2 sets of ”rules” which should be followed to maximize your road efficiency. It’s a necessity to connect buildings to roads, but it’s an art to manage it skillfully and efficiently. It’s one of the things I see many players mess up all the time. Road efficiency is obviously my major focus here. My advice is this: build any mediocre building in low numbers, and if you find a very good building, build more of that. Another thing to note is that larger buildings are more efficient than smaller ones as I'll mention later. In my opinion, that is not entirely true once you do start getting more efficient buildings, you will have the time of your life selling them anyway. I’ve heard it said, “any building is better than empty space”. Ask yourself: is the building worth its size? If yes, you should build it. Then, you must consider the efficiency of the building. You should aim for special buildings, as they are a lot more effective for growth than regular buildings, which are available through events, the Antique Dealer, and Cultural Settlements. I’m not going to go over this in great detail, because this is totally up to you, and there are sheets comparing these building efficiencies anyway. The Notes Feature. For the advanced city, there are four types of buildings you need in your city: resource-producing buildings (for growth), production buildings (for quests and possibly production), military buildings (to train units/Alcatraz produce them and for quests), and Great Buildings which are also vital for growth. The following features remain "online features", which are available via the FoE Helper Website for technical reasons. LB overview: which player has which LB at what level.Guild Expedition placements (member participation is already included). The following functions are currently not yet included in the extension and will be added with one of the next updates: Since version 2.5.7.0 we now also offer the guild member module directly in the extension, which is why we have removed the corresponding modules from our website. All data is now stored locally on your own device and no longer transferred to our server. These were the "Moppelassistent" and the LB investments. In the last few months we put a lot of effort into making as many features directly available in the extension and taking the opportunity to add some more functionality. Last but not least, please note that Dogecoin Core requires at least 5 GB of free space to download at least one chunk of the existing blockchain before you can make full use of its features. And suffering through that has instilled a passion for finding a better way to use my streaming device of choice.īeyond personal pride, I’ve been writing about technology, including streaming devices, for a very long time. It’s bad, but I still use it all the time. The thin design makes it uncomfortable to hold and easy to lose between couch cushions, and the clickable touchpad can be finicky. If you have an older Apple TV, the 3rd generation Siri Remote on the Apple TV 4K is a significant improvement over the previous model. There are other options out there, though. You may not realize this, but you don’t have to settle and use Apple’s remote. Particularly, owners have criticized its awkward touchpad and obtuse design, which makes it difficult to figure out when it’s facing right side up. The first-generation Apple TV Siri Remote has earned a … less than stellar reputation over the years. As it creates an exact copy of the storage drive, cloning takes too much space than other backup solutions. The cloning software isn’t needed to be installed on the other storage drive to use the backup.Data of multiple computers can be easily managed and quickly restored in case of any corruption. You can install the same operating system with custom data and configuration on multiple computers by cloning multiple storage devices.Cloning makes it easier and faster to move to the backup storage as you don’t need to reinstall OS or configure settings. For example, if you have a slow HDD and want to upgrade to an SSD, then cloning software will make it a snap to move everything from your HDD to SSD. If anything ever happens to the data in your first drive, you can boot from the other drive and continue as nothing happened.Īs for cloning, a storage drive creates an exact copy of the drive you can use it to migrate to a different drive. Why clone your storage drive?Ĭloning the storage drive is mainly used for two purposes, to have an exact backup of data or migrate to a new storage drive. Let’s see how disk cloning can be useful for you and the best cloning software in the market to make this process easier for you. One such backup solution is to create an exact copy of your storage drive using cloning software.Ī cloning software will create an exact copy of your storage drive bit-by-bit to a new storage drive, so you can continue using it without needing to reinstall Windows or any other software. Using a newly included script, the window to be mirrored can automatically be moved to the top as soon as you start the mirroring. There are many PC backup solutions available to protect your important data, both online and offline. Window Duplicator will automatically display the mouse cursor from the first screen on the second, as long as the cursor is inside the window to be mirrored. Activate the "Show mouse cursor on second screen" function. Scaling it is up to you.ĭo you want to highlight something on the second screen? This is also possible with Window Duplicator. A window on the projected screen is only reduced in size. You can control the size of the projected screen by resizing the window on the main screen. The window is automatically adjusted on the projected screen according to the screen resolution. The selected window will now be projected on the second display. After verifying that it is the window you want, just press Play. For example, if you have multiple instances of the same application open. This will ensure that this is the right window. A preview is immediately visible only to you. Just select the window you want in Window Duplicator. Only the desired application is mirrored onto the second display. With Window Duplicator, you no longer need to mirror your screen or twist your body. Window Duplicator offers a solution for this. Here you cannot see what you are typing without twisting your body. Now the projector display is usually projected behind you, and it disappears on your screen. The other choice is moving the window to the second display. This also changes your local layout, which is very uncomfortable. Now you need to expose your entire screen on the projector by turning on screen mirroring.
